Birds colony at Rajamunda

Birds colony at Rajamunda

A small colony of about 500+ Asian Openbill stork birds is established at a small village of Rjaamunda, near Rourkela. These storks migrate to this very place somewhere near June and fly back in October once the new-borns are mature enough.

Openbills can be characterised by the gap between the bill. These storks are known to habitat near the paddy fields, from where they can gather 'snails.' Openbill stork is a large bird with the wingspan more than 5 feet. Storks built a big, almost 5 feet wide nest with the help of twigs of Saal or Mango tree. Either parent looks after the babies while other make rounds and bring the food.

Oil and water

Oil and water

Setup for Oil and water:

Setting up to capture oil emulsified in the water certainly is fun and creative. With a simple setup explained below gives the opportunity for capturing infinite combinations of colors and patters at home. The philosophy of shoot is similar shooting smoke from scent-stick.

  • In a glass bowl/dish, mix equal amount of water and oil
  • Keep the bowl/dish at some height.
  • Keep a colorful paper/design with bright colors in the space between the bowl and table
  • Use flash to light the background i.e.the colorful paper
  • Shoot from top, perpendicular to the plane of the liquid to use least depth of field and maximum shutter speed. Higher depth of field may be avoided.

Tips for better results:

  • Use a dedicated macro lens and accessories
  • Clean the glassware before use
  • Use bright multi-colored paper / design for background. I used magenta bottle for some photos.
  • Try different backgrounds
  • Keep the water/oil mixture stirring periodically
  • Use a strong daylight - setup should be near a window
  • Shoot handheld, tripod might be irritating to handle since need to change the composition and place of interest frequently
  • However, take advantage of both.
  • Try using design on the glassware as well instead of simple plan glass
  • As always shoot RAW and edit them

Try to shoot from angles

"Oil in water" is different than "bubble of oils in water"

Terracotta Exhibition

Terracotta Exhibition

Terra - Cotta - meaning baked earth- is a famous art form to create not only sculptures, but for vessels (flowers vase, cooking utensils, cups), building materials (pipes, bricks), and interestingly jewelry.

Bright coloring schemes are used to paint the big vases.

Curvy handles with a contrasting color scheme - Golden vs Magenta. Its a typical color scheme followed in Odisha.

An artist painting the big vases. Most of the stalls by the artists coming from the southern tribal districts of Odisha, mainly Bargarh and Keonjhar.

The work is very complex and needs quite a great amount of concentration. I talked to some of them about the art, everyone was proud of the work they do, they were proud to be the part of the tradition there villages carry.

Terracotta art can produce some unusual forms if used creatively. A coconut on a copper-like vase exhibited at one of shop.

Terracotta Jewelry exhibited - better design, better quality at very less price as compared to the online shops

Clay required is collected from the village lakes. Two types of clay are used in equal proportion: Red and Black. Red is pure clay while black is sandlike.

After sculpting, the item is baked in fire.

After curing, paints are applied. Product is finished with a layer of glaze.

To create a texture, acrylic colors are used for lining.

A closer look - such textures created are often covers the large area of the vase

Bright color schemes certainly making wonders and tempts to buy such captivating vases to decorate the home

Young generation enjoying the skill and art involved in creating such graceful form
