Review of dalma Restaurant in rourkela odisha

Review of Dalma Restaurant in Rourkela Odisha

When in the Rome do what Romans do. Likewise if you are travelling in India you might get baffled what to do first, when choices are many. One thing definitely is to eat local food. However, availability of so many dishes to choose from, decision making is little difficult. Then there are endless classifications such as Veg or non-veg, spicy or sweet, main course or snacks, one course or many, beverages or solid food, hygienic or street food? To every question there is only one solution: finding a good restaurant, which serves authentic local food.

I must say, I was lucky to visit one in Rourkela, the restaurant which serves local Odishi food. Lucky because nobody prescribed it and I never read about. After handing over car for maintenance to dealer, I thought to have lunch in nearby hotel. Restaurant Dalma was the nearest and the look drove me inside.

Food choice:

  • Here several typical Odia dishes are available. To quote a few veg dishes :Dalma,Dahi Baingan
  • Both veg and non veg food is served
  • Staff and service up to the mark
  • Economical compared to the facilities, service and variety offered

Facilities:

  • AC restaurant
  • Ample car parking
  • All cards are accepted. If phone line is down, which is quite probable, carrying cash is wise option.
  • Clean washrooms

Suggestions for improvement:

  • Quality of utensils and cutlery can be replaced with better ones
  • Quantity of food could be more, compensating in price obviously

Review of Patra Guest House, Bhubaneshwar

Review of Patra Guest House, Bhubaneshwar

This review of the Patra Guest House is written after a stay of four nights five days. Room was booked online.

Why I booked the guest house?

  • Location of guest house is in the old town, near to many tourist spot
  • Online reviews were good.
  • Online booking was available
  • Pick up on arrival was available
  • All cards are accepted

Positive points:

  • Working website, hassle free booking
  • Pick-up person contact was messaged and he was punctual to call us before arrival and pick us up
  • Hot water was provided in bucket on request.

Negative points:

Cleanliness:

Room was not prepared before arrival. When asked to clean it, was done halfhearted. Bed sheets and blanket provided were too old.

Provisions:

No towel and soap was provided. No drinking water and glasses were kept in room.

Amenities:

  • TV quality was bad with very few channels displayed in good quality.
  • Intercom was not attended on some occasions.
  • Area of Combined toilet and bathroom was too small. Latches of the doors were nonfunctional.
  • No basin inside the room.
  • Water purifier outside the room was not working.

Ambiance:

  • No room window.
  • Poor wall colors.
  • Single low watt CFL as light source making room indecent.

Furniture and bedding:

  • Wooden beds were old and noisy.
  • Mattress was too thin.
  • Only one blanket was provided even for a double room. When asked for extra, initially request was declined. On insisting a bed sheet was provided. Bed sheet was not changed during entire stay.

Booking assistance:

Although providing website means a professional attitude for such a small guest house, any other support was pathetic and unprofessional. When called on mobile, owner failed to provide information and no call back was promised. Talking to the Male receptionist was also not helpful, probably he was new.

Food quality:

  • I ordered a cup of tea, the quality was so bad that I never dared to order the food from guest-house restaurant.
  • Menu prices were higher compared to good AC restaurants from the city.
  • Availability was for limited time and order needs to be placed an hour before.

Promises:

The photos on website doesn't represent reality and are kind of misleading.
Bed tea promised when room booked online, was never delivered.

Verdict:

As this guesthouse was economical one, I did not expected a posh one. However the standard was far inferior to the money paid. Even basic and standard facilities were absent. At seven hundred per day much better facilities are offered.

I would never book a room in future here.

My rating for this guesthouse would be three point out of ten.

Offbeat Hindi movies : Listen Amaya

Offbeat Hindi movies

An art film is typically a serious, independent film aimed at a focused audience rather than a mass market audience.  As art films often aims to present an artistic/aesthetic work and lacks any commercial approach. Often such film handles offbeat, unorthodox and complex subjects. Sometimes the scripts does a whistle-blower work.

Many of the art movies are exhibited at international film festivals and are never released in public domain. As production is focused, the desired outcome is almost guaranteed. Most of the films thus receive international awards, critical acclaim and still hardly known to masses. Reach of such movies is normally confined to a small circle of viewers. These films are missed by the common man due to poor/restricted advertisement and exposure. Fortunately or unfortunately, all such movies satisfy the definition of a movie by Rosen,

Does art reflect life? In movies, yes. Because more than any other art form, films have been a mirror held up to society's porous face.- Marjorie Rosen

These films have power to change the mindset of the people, educate them and uplift the society. The sad part is, even when distributed freely on You-tube, these movies are hardly watched. For the benefit of readers, I will be writing  series on such such unconventional movies.  Movies, which I have watched and now my favorites. Please do share your views as well !

Listen Amaya - You don't have to be right, you have to be happy

Return of the magnetic duo - Farouque Shaikh (Jayant, a photographer) and Dipti Naval (Leela, a off-beat cafe-owner) - is the main attraction. Third character is Leela's daughter Amaya, played by Swara Bhaskar, helps her mother and interested in writing a book. Jayant inspires her to write a photo-book and offers his assistance as a photographer. Story revolves around how Amaya takes when her co-author turned best friend comes more closer to her mom.

Both Farouqueji and Diptiji has acted subtle and justified the character. Amaya by Swarabhaskar is apt. Supporting actors played their small roles elegantly. Design of offbeat coffee cafe, furnishing from Fabindia, color harmony makes every frame visually charming.

Does their photo book eventually get published?
Will Jayant and Leela marry each other?
What happens to their famous restaurant?

Mere 108 minutes holds the viewer with romantics on the screen and never turns into a really serious tone. It's the feel-good movie of the year 2013 - I found it touching.

3.5 star out of 5

lies, damned lies and statistics - The new Bihar

Lies, damned lies and statistics - The new Bihar

Book review : The New Bihar by N. K Singh and N. Stern

"Statistics are like a bikini. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital.” -  Aaron Levenstein

For last six months or so, Indian politics is facing turmoil. Every week Indian realise some new scam on the horizon. Prolific administrators, experts loosing faith day by day. Old friends are now foes and many new alliances are ready to take first breath on the occasion of coming elections 2014. Out of many obvious fights, such as BJP Vs. Congress, left Vs. right, Established Vs. emerging, common man first time saw two state CM fighting to convenience his state is No.1 Indian state - Gujarat and Bihar.

One-handed control, passion for development, changed attitude of handling power are among many reasons, these two can be really proud of. But instead all of this, then the partners of NDA both CM are now foes and don't want to even utter name of other fellow. Even though the INC being common enemy of both, clashes among two tycoons is going to benefit congress.

If this fight would not have been politically motivated, would have helped the states to excel further. Self esteem among citizens of these states would be real energy to accelerate states further. Being said that, it is equally appreciable that both CM are taking great advantage of the work both have done in the respective state.

To establish the superiority, several strategies are practiced by the respective supporters and admirers, to prove the point of being No. 1 state. One of the way opted by the followers of these two is printed media. The edited book, The new Bihar - rekindling governance and development is on the same path, I presume.

Organisation of the book:

This is edited book by the authors and contains 29 contributed articles. Contributor's list contains some big shots like Amartya Sen, Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Meghnad Desai, M.S. Swaminathan, Nandan Nilekani and others. Book is divided into VII sections: The big picture, The growth turnaround, Fiscal and financial management, Half full, Half empty, Crystal glazing, and The new culture and identity narrative. Book starts with Introduction by editors.

Positive points:

  • On receiving the book, I was impressed by the first appearance. It is well bound and has good quality.
  • Book uses seven original, superb Madhubani paintings by Bharti Dayal. These paintings not only decorates the book but describes the section as well.
  • Articles are divided aptly in seven sections.
  • Few articles by Sudipto Mundle, A. Mukharjee, Rukmnin Banejee, K. Srinath Reddy, M.S. Swaminathan, Y. Alagh, Deepak Parekh, Deepak Bhattasali, Tarun Das and Lord Karan Bilimoria are excellent. These articles forms the 2 sections of the book: Half full and half empty. Mentioned author has written articles which puts forward true picture of Bihar.
  • List of abbreviation ( very important for such kind of book) is complete.

Negative points:

  • Introduction is casually written. It's appears to be a mere copy paste job with added mistakes. It seems to be written in hurry and therefore not homogeneous. There are some technical mistakes in introduction, which can be removed in next edition: Absence of axis names on graphs, small paragraphs, mentions of the vital information borrowed from the articles etc.
  • Book is not edited properly - repetition is the consequence. Till the half of the book similar points such as GDP growth, history of Bihar and exaggerated achievements of CM among many. Some of the articles seems forcefully introduced and carries no substantial addition to the book. Moreover these are written very lousily.
  • As the starting quote of this write-up mentions, statistics is like bikini bathing costume....describes the precise level of the statistical information presented. Revealed info is so presented that it would project only good features of current CM achievements. There is no clear cut mention of failures of the current government. Supplied material is not lie, however not the complete truth. 'The New Bihar...' seem to have some hidden agenda rather than picturing the growth of Bihar.

“There are lies, damned lies and statistics” - Mark Twain

My rating:

2.5 star out of 5. May be liked by those, who knew nothing about Bihar and its administration.

Review : Shala (School), a Marathi Movie

Review : Shala (School), a Marathi Movie

As usual with cinema based on famous book, book is much better to read. Book is soft love story and story moves with subtle pace. Movie lacks this in particular. It seems like director has chosen few incidence, his favorites, and shot them to make movie. Technical side is embarrassment, again as usual with Marathi movie. Editing, camera, sound, photography is not up-to the mark.

Poor script. Many characters are not quite developed as in book. Its difficult in 2 hour movie, I can understand. Then I dont think director would be able to justify the character played by Amruta Khanvilkar. Sometimes viewer (who have read the book) may not be able to find the references for some incidences, while some important ones are missing in the cinema. Characters appear out of blue. (etc. Mahesh).

+ve:

  1. Pretty good casting. Full marks. It cant be better.
  2. Everybody has performed and makes justice to the character. Lead characters, Joshya and Shirodkar are "fantabulous". Anshuman Joshi, playing the hero, carries huge potential. Ketaki Mategaonkar looks sweet and gorgeous, has perfect face for nostalgic moments. Devika Daftardar ("Bendrin"), Ketan Pawar ("Surya") elevates the benchmark of supporting actors.
  3. OK for those who dont want to or had not read the book.
  4. Good song. Probably omitted from theater release. Watched on you tube.
  5. 2 Marks for perfect casting, 1 for their acting and 0.5 for THE ATTEMPT. After reading such nice books, every reader would fill to direct his/her own movie.

-Ve:

-1 for making such attempt a mess. After watching movie, I think its over-rated one.

Goof:

The posters removed by Joshi and his friends are printed using typical MS wordart. May be more, if I could watch it at home on DVD.

Verdict:

In a nutshell: Better to buy book than wasting money in theater. Cinema could have been much better

Movie Review: The Snow Walker (2003)

अत्यंत प्रगल्भ दिग्दर्शन , उत्कृष्ट संवाद, मनमोहक सिनेमेटोग्राफी .... Into the wild सारखाच एक सिनेमा.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth, And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun-split clouds, - and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of - Wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air... Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace Where never lark or even eagle flew - And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand, and touched the face of God!
